The release of the 2020 W-4 Form caused a lot of panic in the HR world – and just when people were feeling a little better with the new IRS process, the latest version of the USCIS I-9 Form is released.

The New 2020 I-9 Form – Here’s What You Need to Know
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published a new version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, on January 31st, 2020.
The new form is available to download on the USCIS website and is dated 10/21/2019. The USCIS advises employers to start using the new form immediately. However, to make sure businesses have the necessary time to make adjustments to their processes, the USCIS is allowing a three-month grace period in which the previous I-9 is still valid.
The previous version of the I-9 (Rev. 07/17/2017 N) will be obsolete after April 30, 2020.
What are the changes made to the new I-9?
The changes made to the form were minor. The USCIS revised the Country of Issuance field in Section 1 and the Issuing Authority field (when selecting a foreign passport) in Section 2 to add Eswatini and Macedonia, North —as the name of these countries have recently changed. Please note that this change is only visible when completing the Form I-9 on a computer.
The form’s instructions were also updated with the following information:
- Clarified who can act as an authorized representative on behalf of an employer (page 6),
- Updated USCIS website addresses (page 14),
- Provided clarifications on acceptable documents for Form I-9 (pages 7-11)
- Updated the process for requesting paper Forms I-9 (page 1),
- Updated the DHS Privacy Notice (page 15)
