Here at GoCo, we used the month of April to educate ourselves on the current needs of the Asian-American community in light of the recent spike in hate-crimes towards them due to the pandemic. In addition to publishing an editorial on the topic and holding a training for our team, we spent the month highlighting Asian-owned businesses around the Houston area that we could support! It’s crucial that we stand in solidarity with vulnerable communities and that we do what we can to not only fight for them in the face of injustice, but support them on a day-to-day basis as well. Here are the amazing businesses that we focused on!
4809 Breen Dr, Houston TX, 77086 | 11701 Alief Clodine Rd, Houston TX, 77072
They’re a family-owned business that first opened in 1986, and they opened a second location in 2010. They provide both wholesale and retail of their plant selections, bonsai, herbs, vegetables, pottery, fertilizer, and soil. With a huge variety of both indoor and outdoor plants, you’re sure to find the perfect additions for your home!
6816 Ranchester Dr, Houston TX, 77036
This is an incredible restaurant located in Bellaire that serves authentic Chinese and Vietnamese dishes! (The Rice Cake and Honey Walnut Shrimp are my personal favorites!) Similar to JRN, TAN TAN® started out in 1986 as a small family business. They attribute their success to “their family of hardworking employees, quality vendors, and loyal customers.”
How to support: Drop in for a bite to eat or get some takeout for a more COVID-friendly way to support them! Also, be sure to follow their Facebook for updates.
1106 Silber Rd, Houston TX, 77055 | 2518 W Holcombe Blvd, Houston TX, 77030 | 1214 W 43rd St, #500, Houston TX, 77018
Our third spotlight of the month went to Tamashi Ramen and Sushi!
This is a relatively new restaurant, with their first location opening in June of 2017. That just makes their quick expansion to three locations that much more impressive! Their specialty and uniquely made in house shrimp broth ramen is what really put them on the map. I’ve actually ordered this a couple of times myself, and trust me, it’s as good as they say it is if not better!
12750 Southwest Freeway, Stafford TX, 77477 | 2001 Jefferson, Houston TX, 77003 | 10603 Bellaire Blvd, Houston TX, 77072
Last but certainly not least, we have Kim Son!
Like Tamashi, Kim Son also has three locations around Houston. They serve authentic Vietnamese and Chinese dishes! The original Kim Son was in Vinh Long in Vietnam, but it closed due to the communist takeover. Kim Su Tran La, lovingly called “Mama La,” came to Houston in 1980 as a refugee, bringing with her over 250 recipes that she had memorized from her mother-in-law! Since then, Kim Son has gained great popularity here and has been featured in magazines such as Bon Appétit, Esquire, and Food and Wine.
